Martin Luther Kings Motel Room, Several Hours After He Was Shot, Memphis, Tennessee 1968

Steve Schapiro

LIFE Magazine sent Schapiro to Memphis upon hearing the news of MLKs death. He photographed the empty room at the Lorraine Motel where he was resting just minutes before he was shot. The room and property are now a dedicated Civil Rights museum, preserved from the day captured here as a physical reminder of his legacy.
