A Terrifying Mother, 1980

Gerald Scarfe

This early painting of ‘The Mother’ is Scarfe’s favourite depiction of one of the most significant characters from The Wall.

Waters wrote about a Mother’s smothering love in the song 'The Trial' – “Mama's gonna put all her fears into you”. The film version of ‘The Trial’ has an animated sequence in which the Mother emerges from the wall as a jet plane, and goes through a series of terrifying mutations. Finally, becoming the very wall that encircles her helpless son. "I always drew The Mother for the concert and film with arms that turned into walls and enclosed our main character, Pink."

An animation of the Mother was used during ‘The Trial’ in Pink Floyd’s 1980 live concerts, and then later, in the film. She also became one of the inflatables that towered over the stage set.
