The Grateful Dead, 1967

Bob Seidemann

"This was the second attempt to make this picture. On a previous attempt the police stopped us. I had to round up the Dead and five people, who were to hold mirrors, which is how the effect of light in the faces was made. When we arrived at the location in Daly City, the police showed up and ran us off. Rounding up that herd again was a major feat.

This image became a poster and was distributed around the country. It became an icon of the time and communicated to the American young people a sense of the movement that was taking place in California." - Bob Seidemann
