George Harrison and Pattie Boyd, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, 1967

Grant Jacobs

On August 7th, 1967 George Harrison and Pattie Boyd visited her sister Jenny who was then living in San Francisco. Wanting to check out the famed Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood, they attempted to inconspicuously walk through. Inevitably, people soon caught on to the highly recognizable couple and a crowd of fans began to form around them as they went along, into nearby Golden Gate Park. Someone put a guitar in George's hands and, not wanting to cause a scene, but growing nervous about the crowd bearing down on them, he politely strummed and joked as they headed toward the nearest exit. Photographer Grant Jacobs just happened to be on the scene to capture this one-of-a-kind moment that day, and Pattie used this portrait in her autobiography to illustrate what life was like being married to a Beatle in the 1960s!
