Carly Simon, New York, 1980 (Twin Towers Reflection)

Carinthia West

I was having lunch with Carly at the Riverside Cafe in Brooklyn, in the mid 80s. She was laughing about something I said and, as she threw her head back, her sunglasses caught the reflection of Manhattan’s twin towers across the river. A few years later, Carly would write the theme song for Working Girl called “Let The River Run,” influenced by the Staten Island ferry and the view from that Brooklyn restaurant. Little did we know, the skyline would be forever changed by the tragic events of 9/11. Carly herself says “I’ve not been to that restaurant before or since”.
