Norma Jean, Sailor Girl

Bruno Bernard

A portrait of Marilyn Monroe in a sailor's cap from 1946, when she went by the name Norma Jean Baker. This is from photographer Bernard of Hollywood's first sitting with the 19-year-old, whom he discovered. Bernard gave this photo, along with other girl-next-door images to Ben Lyons, head of the 20th Century Fox talent department. These images got Norma Jean her first studio screen test and motion picture contract. Later Marilyn told Bernard she’d never forget it started with him.
