Alabama Freedom March, National Guard

Stephen Somerstein

Civil rights workers march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama while protected by 2,000 soldiers of the U.S. Army, 1,900 members of the Alabama National Guard under Federal command, and many FBI agents and Federal Marshals.

The march lasted five days and four nights, culminating in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "How Long, Not Long" speech on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol.
