Martin Luther King Jr. Speaking, Watts Riots, 1965

Lawrence Schiller

The Watts Riots broke out in Los Angeles on August 11, 1965. 34 people were killed, thousands were injured, and hundreds of buildings were burned and destroyed. The racial tensions and increased support for black power and black violence sparked the event. An incident like this went against everything Dr. King had worked on, and he spoke out against the violence.
