Black Power Salute, 1968 Olympics

Neil Leifer

Tommie Smith and John Carlos - the gold and bronze medalists in the men's 200-meter race - give a clenched-fist salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Both athletes were members of the Olympics Project for Human Rights, an organization established by sociologist Harry Edwards to protest racial segregation in the United States.
