Exploding Tear Gas Canister

Merideth Grierson

People's Park is off Telegraph Avenue near the UC Berkeley campus. Created during the radical political activism of the late 1960s, the park was the scene of many protests.

"A July 14, 1969 People's Park confrontation ended at the UC Berkeley Campus. As I was photographing the intersection from the balcony of the Student Union, one of the policemen launched a tear gas canister at me." - Merideth Grierson

The blur in the foreground of this exquisite photo is actually the tear gas canister exploding right in front of the photographer's lens. To place herself in such a precarious position, and still get the shot, is the mark of a courageous documentarian.
