The Who, Who Are You Album Cover, Shepperton Studios, 1978

Terry O'Neill

The front cover of 1978's classic Who Are You. This album was a move away from epic rock opera and towards a more radio-friendly sound, though it did contain one song from a never-completed rock opera by John Entwistle. Two weeks after the release, drummer Keith Moon sadly died of a drug overdose.

On the album cover, Moon was told to sit on the chair in that manner to hide all the weight he had gained; his gut was actually sticking far over the trousers he was wearing. Coincidentally, the chair was marked with the label "NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY" - an ironic foreshadowing of the tragedy that would take his life.
