Beatles to Bowie

San Francisco Art Exchange presents Beatles to Bowie now thru August 8. On display are over 50 photos by European and American photographers whose lenses were inside witnesses to the most influential moments and people of an era.

We wanted to highlight the cultural impact of musical avant-garde change agents during a unique period. This survey is bookended by two giant icons that arguably initiated the cycles that followed their popular ascensions.

THERON KABRICH

British celebrity photographer Terry O'Neill has included photos he recently discovered in his personal archive. O'Neill had access to British musicians that other photographers at the time didn't. He spent time with the bands before they "made it big", capturing defining moments in the careers of The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, Bowie, and more.

Other musicians in the show's spotlight are The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Syd Barrett, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Marianne Faithfull, Eric Clapton, Queen, Debbie Harry, and many others. Among the photographers whose work is featured are David Montgomery, Joel Brodsky, Ethan Russell, Gered Mankowitz, Ian Dickson, Barry Feinstein, Paul Saltzman, Baron Wolman, Bob Seidemann, Jerrold Schatzberg, Astrid Kirchherr, Iain MacMillan, Michael Cooper, David Redfern, and others.

Beatles to Bowie, has been produced and curated in association with long time friend of the gallery, Raj Prem Fine Art Photography.
