ABOUT US

We are the worldwide leaders and pioneers in the representation and sale of the original art and photography of popular culture. We are recognized as the market-makers and authorities of Rock music-related original artworks and photography as well as with Pin-up illustration, and other popular iconography. Our relationships run deep within the music, film, and publishing worlds where we are respected for our expertise and leadership.

We have over three thousand works of art and photographs at our downtown gallery and thousands more available through our network of relationships with over two hundred
important artists and photographers. These pieces feature iconic figures in music, Hollywood stars, athletes and historical figures like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra and hundreds of others.

Our market is global and we have thousands of clients around the world. We are the top Beatles original photography dealer in the world and we have represented the artwork of Rolling Stone's Guitarist Ronnie Wood since 1987. Such artwork often sells into the six, and now seven-figures. Among the many historic sales we have concluded are:
The original artwork used to create the album cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, the original photography that appeared on the album cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road, many original paintings by pin-up artist Alberto Vargas, and vintage original photographs of Marilyn Monroe on set of The Seven Year Itch. Recently we set a world record by selling the original Scream painting used globally to advertise the groundbreaking film Pink Floyd The Wall, for $1.85 million.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Jim Hartley and Theron Kabrich co-founded San Francisco Art Exchange LLC in 1983 as brokers of fine art by such historically important artists as Picasso, Miro, Dali, Chagall, Warhol and many others.

In 1985 the Alberto Vargas Estate selected SFAE to represent their vast collection of original works by one of America's most famous artists of all-time. We debuted the treasured collection with a widely-attended retrospective during the summer of that year and we have since sold over $25 million of Alberto Vargas artwork. Due in part to the immediate and substantial success of the Vargas debut, in 1987 we were approached by the management team of another artist looking for North American distribution and representation - The Rolling Stone's multi-talented guitarist, Ronnie Wood, who has become one of the world's most collectible living artists and for whom we have exceeded $10 million in sales of his artwork alone.

By the early 1990's we began in earnest to expand and refocus our attention to the  illustration and photography from popular culture which were clearly under appreciated, if not entirely overlooked by the art market in general. Were we crazy, obsessed, and professionally reckless? Many thought we were. Ultimately, however, that pioneering madness has today placed us in high regard among aficionados, personalities, artists, photographers and fans throughout the world.

We were among the first in our industry to take our business online in 1996. Since then we have grown in our influence and expanded our reach. We are now also involved in exploring film projects as a natural evolution of who we are and what we do.

In addition to holding over 100 ground-breaking exhibitions over the years, we have also been honored to host amazing intimate performances by world-renowned musicians at our gallery including Laurence Juber, the acoustic maestro who performed with Paul McCartney and Wings, Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Hollies, and Brian Wilson and his band. We have also hosted speakers such as famed civil rights pioneer Clarence Jones, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s friend and speech writer, as well as former Michigan governor and political activist, Jennifer Granholm.

The market which we lead is ripe for unprecedented growth and we are looking for a motivated staff to help us reach the greater goals made possible by the rapidly expanding opportunities that lay before us. Dream big, stay determined, work hard....expect success!
